I’m sorry I didn’t have a post up last week, and I don’t have anything prepared for today, either. By now I think most of you are settling into our new reality of physical distancing and interacting online. I work for my municipality, and my section works with the more vulnerable sectors of my city’s population, so we have been busy putting things in place to help and support them. Between that and sleep it hasn’t left me a lot of free time to write, sadly.
But I wanted to take a moment to comment on the tabletop gaming community, and how I’ve seen it come together during this time. I have been moved to see creators in our community stepping up with free and heavily discounted copies of their work in an effort to help folx cope with isolation, and the increased anxiety and stress that can come with that. I have seen offers of virtual games, and folx popping up on Twitter and in various Discords offering to run games for anyone who wants to join. I have received a bunch of those offers as well, and please know that I appreciate them more than you know. As soon as my schedule permits I will likely join some virtual tables, sling dice and tell stories.
We are entering into the second week (or more, for some) of this isolation process, and best estimates are we will have to continue physical distancing for several more weeks if not months. So I encourage those that can to keep checking in on and with your fellow nerds. Stay connected, keep gaming, keep sharing stories and cat videos and silly memes. Help those that need it if and as best you can, and share requests for help as far and wide as you can.
I am exceedingly lucky that my weekly gaming group was able to smoothly transition to connecting online. I encourage you to do the same. It doesn’t take as much as you think; Google Hangout is free if you already have Gmail, and setting up a session is easy. Maybe you can’t play with all the maps and minis and such, but you can still talk to one another and share adventures. Right now that’s not nothing.
And if you need to talk, reach out to me on Twitter. I’m @DorklordCanada, my DMs are open, and I’m happy to talk. Hopefully this week my schedule will settle down, and I can start offering to run some games myself. When I do I’ll post about it on Twitter, and I hope you can join me.
It’s tough right now, no question. Some of us are hit harder by this situation than others. Help if you can; accept help if you need it. We will get through this together.
